Appeal for Information from Farmers
March 2006
What would it mean for your farm and family if Terminator technology made it impossible to save and re-use seed from your harvest?
Terminator refers to plants that are genetically engineered to render sterile seeds at harvest.
If you had to buy seed every growing season, what would it cost you? We are trying to get real-time estimates of the cost to farmers if governments let Terminator be commercialized. Please share what the cost would be -- and what it would mean for your farm and family.
Please send us an estimate for one or more crops that you grow.
We need to know:
- Where do you farm? (what country, province or state)
- For which crop are you providing an estimate?
- How often (if ever) do you purchase seed now?
- What would it cost, in total, to buy "commercial" or “certified" seed for your land?
- Do you plant this crop more than once a year?
- Do you often have to replant due to bad weather or other conditions?
- What would the additional annual cost be if you were forced to purchase commercial Terminator seed at every planting?
- What would this mean for your farm and family?
Please send this information to: banterminator@etcgroup.org
The names and email addresses of farmers who respond will NOT be used in any information that is made public -- farmers will only be identified by the country
they live in.
Also, we encourage you to send the information to your prime minister or president, and your Minister of Agriculture, asking them to make sure that they continue to support the UN moratorium against Terminator at the Convention on Biological Diversity - and press for a national ban.
